Laser Hair Removal With the Coolglide Laser

Technology plays an important role in terms of results for laser hair removal. There are many different types of laser's in the industry. These laser technologies are based on different depths of penetration. Darker skin tones must be extremely careful when choosing a laser clinic or laser technology due to the fact that all laser's are attracted to pigment. For darker skin types (Skin types 4, 5, and especially 6), this possesses a problem since these skin types have a lot of pigmentation in the skin along with the hair follicle. In order to successfully treat the hair while not damaging the skin, a laser which penetrates adequate depth in the hair follicle is ideal.

The Coolglide Nd Yag laser from Cutera is well known for laser hair removal for all skin types. This technology also has an additional chill tip which is ideal for darker skins as well by cooling the skin with every pulse. If the correct technology is used, darker skin types may experience excellent results with fewer treatments as the technician may be fairly aggressive at treating the hair without worrying about epidermal damage. The Coolglide Laser is considered the "gold standard" for darker skin types and was the recipient for the award for best laser for darker skin during the 2006 Laser & Light Technology Choice Awards. Although this laser may be safe and effective for all skin types, it is ideal for those who have dark hair. Those with fine hair or light hair may see better results with the Lightsheer laser which has a wavelength of 800nm.

There are 5 basic laser technologies available in the market:

Ruby: The first laser system available for hair removal was the Ruby with a Wavelength of 694nm. This laser has high melanin absorption characteristics. Due to this high melanin absorption, the treatment was deemed unsafe for olive toned or darker skin types.

Alexandrite:The Alexandrite laser was also one of the earlier systems developed for hair removal. This laser has a wavelength of 755nm. The alexandrite laser was effective for those with extremely fair skins and dark hair.

Diode: The Diode laser is considered the best hair removal technology for all skin types except for black skins. A diode laser has a wavelength of 810nm which is fantastic for attracting melanin in the hair follicle since this laser travels a little further down the hair shaft in comparison to a Ruby or Alexandrite system. This longer wavelength allows for increased epidermal safety. The Lightsheer diode laser for hair removal is the best diode laser available since the system has a built in cooling system. This cooling system allows for increased effectiveness by providing contact cooling with every pulse. The Lightsheer is considered the "Gold Standard" for hair removal

Nd Yag: An Nd Yag laser has a wavelength 1064nm. This laser is the safest and most effective laser for all skin types, especially dark skins. An Nd Yag system has the longest wavelength of all the available laser systems in the market. By having a longer wavelength, this system is less likely to attract the pigment in the skin which is why this system is ideal for darker skin types. The Coolglide is considered the "Gold Standard" for darker skins since this 1064nm laser also has a built in cooling system for maximum epidermal safety.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): IPL systems or Intensed Pulsed Light is also used for hair removal. IPL systems are light based systems which utilize multiple wavelengths of light as oppose to a laser which is one concentrated beam of light. Wavelengths vary from 700 to 1200 nm. IPL systems can be effective for hair removal, however, the results vary greatly depend on the type of IPL system used. There are only a few IPL systems which have been proven to generate a permanent result with consecutive treatments. The most popular is the Prowave 770 IPL system which has a programmable wavelength. Since various IPL systems are available with various degrees of effectiveness, it is best to go to a laser clinic which has lasers in addition to IPL systems since IPL systems have limitations depending on your skin type.

In general if you are thinking of laser hair removal, it is important to go to a laser clinic has access to more than one laser technology.
