How To Rid The Skin Of Acne Scars

Many people have acne scars that they would like to eliminate or at least have them appear less visible. Creams are usually not going to have any affect on old, deep scars. Therefore, if the scars are bothersome enough - a visit to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon may be the answer.

Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies can be very effective for acne scars. These lasers/lights work by using an intense light focused on the skin. The scar is given special attention as the light/laser penetrates through the skin "burning" off the scar tissue. The light stimulates new collagen within the skin. When the treated area heals the blemish is usually less noticeable. The effectiveness of lasers and IPL treatments depends on skin type and type of scar.

After treatments, the skin will be red and possibly weepy for a few weeks. Sun block will be a necessity after treatments for at least six months.

The results of the treatments will not be noticed until at least 10 months to possibly over a year. Follow-up treatments may also be needed depending on the severity of the scar - but another will be scheduled between six months to a year.

Microdermbrasion is another option if the acne scars are not too deep. Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical treatment that exfoliates the skin's top layer smoothing out scar tissue. Tiny crystals are sprayed onto the skin through a hand-held device that suctions the crystals - this causes new skin growth and the scar eventually appears less noticeable. Although with scars this process can take several months to accomplish.
