Should You Remove Acne Scars With Acne Scar Laser Treatment?

First of all, before you can answer this question - should you use acne scar laser treatment - have you tried ever other methods to remove your scarring? One of the reasons I ask this question is that this type of laser therapy can be very expensive, it may not be available in every city and you may get a much better value for your money with other, less expensive techniques.

In order to determine if acne scar laser treatment may be right for you I have some things that you should seriously consider.

What is your biggest concern about removing your scars?

For most of us, it's about the pain, or perceived pain we may experience from a treatment - any kind of a medical procedure. Whether it be surgery or skin-related, pain is usually a big deal. Medical science has come a long way during the last century, and pain reduction has been a big part of that success. Pain is usually referred to as "discomfort," ranging from mild to severe. While measuring discomfort is difficult, acne scar laser treatment is usually rated at somewhere between mild discomfort and moderate discomfort.

Is The Cost Of The Procedure A Factor?

If the cost of an acne scar laser treatment has you worried, then you have a legitimate concern, Fraxel laser treatments, which is a new, restorative laser skin therapy can be pretty expensive, with costs ranging from a low of $700 to a high of $6,000 - and beyond. The Fraxel treatment is used for removing scarring as well as "resurfacing wrinkled, sun-damaged, and aging skin." The laser acts like a very efficient and mild dermabrasion treatment, removing layers of damaged skin, and hopefully removing the scars too.

I've read some good things about the Fraxel laser treatment - the procedure is fairly painless, and the results are generally pretty good. Of course, they do have to be administered by a doctor, and, as stated above, they can be expensive. Lasers used on human tissues have had some great successes over the last 20 years or so, LASIK eye surgery is possible only because of the perfection of a sophisticated laser system. As LASIK became more popular, more eye doctors performed the procedure, and the price came down. Maybe the same will happen with the Fraxel treatment.

What Does Your Dermatologist Recommend?

You should talk with your doctor first. He or she has the knowledge and experience to tell which treatment is best for acne scarring. Treatments like a chemical peel or a series of dermabrasion treatments may work just as well as the acne scar laser treatment - and a much cheaper price. There's even a chance that your insurance company may cover the costs of scar treatment for you. But, you should always start with your dermatologist when you are looking for medical advice.

There is usually no one right way to remove acne scars, and the acne scar laser treatment definitely has some things going for it. One, the treatment is usually very effective, and mostly painless. In fact, the most common use for the Fraxel treatment is to smooth and/or eliminate wrinkles. Scar removal is just another application of this exciting technology.
