Laser Hair Removal - It's Not Just for Women!

Although it has long been the best method of hair removal for women, laser hair removal is now becoming increasingly popular with men. The treatment is possibly the best out there for men who want to get rid of unwanted and excess hair on the body.

The laser hair treatment works in the same way it does for women, but men will need more treatments as male hair is very different to female hair.

Laser hair removal targets the melanin (the dark pigment that gives hair its colour). As the melanin absorbs the laser's light, the resulting heat kills the surrounding hair follicles. As this treatment only works on dark hair, men are at an advantage. As well as the laser needing to locate melanin, the hair must also be in a certain stage of its growth cycle for the treatment to be effective. This cycle is known as the 'active growing phase' and is when the hair is connected to the base of the hair follicle. This connection provides a direct pathway for the laser energy to disperse where the hair is produced at the base of the follicle, destroying it and limiting any re-growth. The majority of men have very dark or even black hairs on their body, making it easier for the laser to target the hairs you want to remove. Men typically want excess hair removing from their back, chest, neck, abdomen and sometimes the thighs.

Male hair removal has long been a tradition amongst male athletes, particularly swimmers, cyclists and bodybuilders who feel that it helps their performance in competitions. Now, men from all walks of life are enjoying the benefits of laser hair removal from the young to the old. The main reason for men pursuing laser hair removal is to look more attractive. Above all else, men are having the treatment because they hate having too many dark hairs on their body, especially with the stigma that is attached to a hairy back.

But it's not all about vanity. A lot of men who undergo sknclinics.co.uk/treatments-and-pricing/laser-hair-removal laser hair removal treatments just want a cleaner, well groomed appearance minus the hassle that comes with it. Waxing, shaving and even hair removal cream doesn't have the same effect on male hairs as they are often a lot thicker and coarser than women's. This makes waxing incredibly painful, shaving very difficult and time consuming and hair removal cream almost pointless.

The treatment is virtually painless. It may feel slightly odd at first and you may feel slight discomfort after your first treatment, but as you get used to the sensation you barely notice it. Cold air is blown across the skin during the procedure to relieve any mild discomfort you may feel.

You will need to have the treatment on a regular basis to get the maximum benefit. Facial hair is treated every 4 weeks and body hair is treated every 6 weeks. A minimum of six treatments is recommended for the best and most long-lasting results. Initially after the treatment you may experience redness in the skin but this is completely normal and subsides within 24 hours.

If you or someone you know wants any more information about the procedure, speak to an expert at your local clinic who can advise you on the best course of treatment.
