What is Laser Hair Removal? The Laser Hair Removal Guide

Quite simply, in the majority of cases, hair growth is caused by a family of hormones called androgens which also harbors the hormone testosterone. An influx of these hormones (not necessarily testosterone ladies!) causes increased hair growth, which is why we see more hair in the pubic, underarm, upper lip, nipple regions as these parts are most sensitive to the hormones.

If you are embarrassed about excess hair growth and are tired of watering eyes whilst you pluck at all your unwanted hair then laser hair removal may be beneficial to you. Many treatments will depend on your skin colour and hair type and will differ from person to person but the best results are thought to occur in those with light skin and dark hair. However, don't lose hope if this doesn't apply to you as there are many other treatments available that cater for everyone's needs.

When you begin your treatment you will undergo sessions in which the area of unwanted hair is subjected to beams of light ultimately damaging the hair follicles and reducing the size of them. The number of sessions needed will depend on a variety of factors including the size of the area being treated. In most cases it will take from 6 - 12 sessions in order to completely rid you of your unwanted hair. However, once achieved the results can last upto 10 years, if not a lifetime.

Currently, the most popular laser hair removal treatments include:

- Nd:YAG

- Ruby

- Alexandrite

- Diode

All of which will vary considerably in costs and depend highly upon what area you want treating. Typically, prices can range as much from £40-£400 per session, and don't forget you will need more than one of these! Sometimes you can pay for each individual session which can benefit you if you don't need as many as first thought; whilst some clinics will expect a lump payment at the start of your treatment. However, even though laser hair removal may seem costly at first, in the long run it is thought to be economical in comparison with buying numerous cosmetic products.

As long as you are aware of the side-effects and have received the right advice from your doctor, consultant and so on then there is no reason why laser hair removal shouldn't be for you. In just several weeks you could be hair free following what are generally very pain-free procedures, you will have minimal upkeep of your previously hairy area and won't have to splash out on numerous hair removal kits.
