Fraxel Laser For Age, Sun Spots

Prolonged sun exposure can be absolutely detrimental to maintaining beautiful, youthful-looking skin. Combined with the process of aging, in which your skin losing essential proteins and elasticity, sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving dark spots that affect your skin's appearance.

What are Sun/Age Spots

Sun/Age spots are areas of dark pigmentation commonly referred to in the medical field as solar lentigines. These areas can appear by either prolonged sun exposure or by aging, and some people are more susceptible to sun/age spots than others. The inclination your skin has to showing these spots can depend on several factors, including genetics, type of skin, and ethnicity.

How Does The Fraxel Laser Pinpoint Sun/Age Spots?

When you undergo Fraxel laser treatment, the laser works to encourage your skin's own natural collagen and elastin production. Since collagen already naturally occurs in your body to repair damaged skin tissue, the slight damage that is caused by the Fraxel laser to the dermis encourages your skin to produce more collagen and elastin in response.

The collagen and elastin production that is essentially "jumpstarted" by the Fraxel laser treatment give your skin a more hydrated, youthful, elastic consistency. The age spots or sun spots that were present on the epidermis layer of your skin then begin to repair with new skin growth. This new skin is full of collagen and elastin - both of which are necessary for youthful, fresh-looking skin.

How Many Treatments Will It Take?

Typically, the Fraxel laser is able to resurface approximately 20% of the skin's surface each time you undergo treatment. This generally means that your skin will need five or more treatments in order to fully receive the best possible outcome. Sometimes more or less laser treatment is needed, depending on the severity of the damage, the tone and elasticity of your skin, and several other factors such as your skin's own ability to heal and the type of Fraxel laser used. Your plastic surgeon or aesthetician will be able to give you a better idea of how many treatments to expect once you go in for a consultation and they look at the particular area in which you want treatment.
