Laser Cosmetic Surgery

The terminology "LASER" actually means Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers work by producing an intense beam of bright light that travels in one direction. This laser beam can cut, seal or vaporize skin tissue and blood vessels. Lasers are no longer seen as the tool used to harm ones foes as was the case in classic science fictional films. The laser has the unique ability to produce one specific colour (wavelength) of light which can be varied in its intensity and pulse duration.

Recently, technological advances have improved lasers; making laser surgery a preferred method of treatment compared with standard techniques in treating skin blemishes, tumours, birthmarks, and facial changes due to aging. Lasers are no longer seen as the tool used to harm ones foes as was the case in classic science fictional films.

I read cosmetic surgery was only actually discovered by accident. When surgeons were carrying out acne removal treatment they noticed that the light wrinkles around the eyes also disappeared. Collagen is a key fibrous protein in the skin's connective tissue, and it helps give the skin its texture. Collagen has been widely used in cosmetic surgery. When used cosmetically, there is a chance of allergic reactions causing prolonged redness; however, this can be virtually eliminated by simple and inconspicuous patch testing prior to cosmetic use. Natural aging and such factors as sun damage and smoking help break down the collagen layer so that the skin's once smooth surface develops wrinkles. New, more youthful collagen actually forms after laser treatment.

Cosmetic laser surgery is a very controlled burning procedure during which a laser vaporizes superficial layers of facial skin, removing not only wrinkles and lines caused by sun damage and facial expressions, but also acne scars, some folds and creases around the nose and mouth.

The popularity of cosmetic laser surgery is evident in the results. A surgery manager I once spoke to advised cosmetic laser surgery can make a patient look 10 to 20 years younger with long lasting results. It is important to bear in mind that after such treatment patients need to take great care in prolonged exposure to sun a can destroy their skin.

AS with any type of cosmetic surgery you really need to evaluate if it is actually needed. Ask yourself what are the true benefits of carrying out such surgery and please do not forget the physical discomfort that patients also need to go through. You also need to take into account the time needed to recover from the surgery.

Also if you have very sensitive skin there could be a possibility that you may not be able to tolerate the medication that is needed during the healing process. Also you may find that if you skin is dark in colour, laser cosmetic surgery can actually the colour of the skin. Whilst the skin is healing there is also the possibility of bruising and swelling. Weighing up these factors you should be able to come to a balanced conclusion of what is actually the right choice for yourself.

Risk involved with laser cosmetic surgery.

Please note this is a very serious medical procedure and prior to any treatment you will more than likely go through a series of tests. After treatment there is a possibility that you may find redness of the skin, tenderness and some pigment changes. Other risks are more serious, and possibly permanent, including hypo pigmentation, or lightening of the skin.

Because both qualified and unqualified practitioners are flooding the cosmetic laser surgery field, consumers may face some real hazards. Some laser manufacturers are so eager to sell their products that they stage one or two day meetings, or courses, for training.

To date, no national policy exists for credentialing those planning to practice laser surgery although the FDA is responsible for granting individual manufacturers permission to market their lasers for the specific indications requested.

Finding the Best Surgeon

Selecting a laser surgeon is just like picking a qualified doctor for any medical treatment. The Internet is a good place to start the search. There are many websites and information pages.
