Can Fraxel Laser Treatment Remove Stretch Marks?

When most people think of laser treatment, they think of skin resurfacing for the face. While facial wrinkles, marks, and scars are the most common reasons for seeking laser treatment - the technology of Fraxel laser can do so much more! For instance, did you know that Fraxel laser treatment is one of the best ways to greatly reduce the visibility of stretch marks? In many cases, stretch marks can be completely removed after several successive treatments.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

These unsightly imperfections are caused by rapid stretching of skin that has not been given enough time to reach sufficient elasticity. Any sudden weight gain (such as weight gained with pregnancy) could produce them on your skin. As the skin is stretched, the supporting layers of the dermis can become damaged due to being stretched beyond their limits. When this occurs, the skin can take on streaks of red, purple, or white, and can also appear raised (like scars) and glossy - imperfections on the surface of the skin that can often be unattractive and obvious.

How Does The Fraxel Laser Pinpoint Them?

When you undergo Fraxel laser treatment for removing stretch marks, the laser works to encourage your skin's own natural collagen production. The benefits of this stimulated collagen production is that collagen is a compound that contains a lot of protein, and already naturally occurs in your body to repair damaged skin tissue. The laser simply encourages more collagen development, giving your skin a boost of collagen to help fill in the lines that have been created - making them blend more into the rest of your skin.

How Many Treatments Will It Take?

Typically, the Fraxel laser is able to resurface approximately 20% of the skin's surface each time the procedure is done. This means that most treatments will require five or more visits in order to fully receive the best possible outcome. Sometimes, more or less laser treatment is needed, depending on the severity of the damage, the tone and elasticity of your skin, and several other factors such as your skin's own ability to heal and the type of laser used.
