Laser Hair Removal and Costs

There are several different methods to remove unwanted hair. Most of these - waxing, shaving, using a depilatory cream - are only temporarily effective. For a more permanent solution, more and more people are now turning to laser hair removal. The cost can be high but not if it is seen as a long term investment.

The question most commonly asked by those considering laser treatment is "how much will it cost?" In fact the price depends on several variables. For the treatment to be effective, follicles need to be hit during their growth phase, thus several sessions are always needed (even for small areas) as growth phase varies from one follicle to another.

Some people balk at the high cost of laser hair removal - however it is no more expensive than electrolysis, nor is it more expensive than all those waxes, creams and razors if you calculate what these add up to over the years.

Anyway, there are five basic factors which affect the cost of laser treatment

1. The size of the area being treated. Smaller areas can be treated more quickly and hence will be cheaper .

2. The area you live in. Treatment tends to vary from place to place, just like the cost of living. Thus laser treatment in thriving cities tends to be more expensive than in smaller towns.

3. The number of sessions you need. Four sessions are normally sufficient but for particularly stubborn hair growth more are required.

4. Hair colour. This has an effect because the pigment in the hair absorbs the laser energy. This works most efficiently when your hair is a lot darker than your skin tone. Thus light skinned people with dark hair respond best to this treatment, whilst blond hair requires more sessions and thus tends to cost more.

5. Skin colour is also a factor. Very dark skin absorbs energy from the laser so really dark skinned people do not benefit greatly from this sort of treatment. It can also be dangerous for them as the laser energy absorbed by the skin pigment can lead to burning of the skin.
