Electrolysis Versus Laser Hair Removal - Which Method is Best?

There are several methods for permanent hair removal. The most popular of them are electrolysis and laser hair removal. Choosing the suitable method is a common problem for those who have unwanted hair. In this article I will try to compare advantages and disadvantages of both electrolysis and laser hair removal.

History

Electrolysis has a long history. The first experiments with usage of electrolysis for hair elimination have been performed in the latter part of the 1800's.

FDA approved usage of lasers for hair removal in 1995. So the laser method is a rather new method and still may have some unknown issues.

Limitations

Laser hair removal works well for people with light skin and dark hair. It will not be so effective for blonde hair. People with dark skin may receive burns caused by laser thermal influence. But laser method can be used for large such as chest or back where electrolysis is inapplicable.

Electrolysis can be used by people with any color of skin and hair. But it can be used only for little areas of skin such as upper lip or chin.

Required Time

For permanent removal of unwanted hair you will need about 6 sessions of electrolysis or 4 sessions of laser treatment. Each electrolysis session takes around 35 minutes while laser sessions longs no more than 10 minutes. Sessions for both methods are spaced with two weeks. So electrolysis requires much more time.

Cost

Laser treatment is much more expensive method. The cost of laser treatment may vary from $400 to $2000 depending on different factors while the average cost of electrolysis is somewhere around $250.

Pain

Electrolysis is invasive method so it causes some painful feelings. Every follicle will be affected so it may be unacceptable method for people who can not resist paint.

Laser hair removal is a noninvasive method so it is almost painless. You may experience some uncomfortable feeling during the procedure but most people do not feel anything at all.

Possible side effects

Electrolysis does not have any known side effects. But after the procedure you should protect your skin using some special methods. If you will follow the rules you will not experience any troubles.

There are some risks in laser method. The most common problems are skin darkening and lightening. However these effects are temporary and will disappear with time.
