Skin Treatments

Treatments of skin diseases are varied in nature. Dermatologists are specially trained doctors who deal with skin only. The word originated from the Greek work "derma," which means skin. Since it is the largest organ of our body, it is also prone to a lot of problems. Eternal conditions play a very big part in the cause of skin problems.

For skin-related conditions, a dermatologist takes care of diagnosis and treatment, and dermasurgeons perform surgeries, such as skin cancer surgery (including Mohs' micrographic surgery), laser surgery and photodynamic therapy (PDT). A much sought-after surgery is cosmetic surgery where procedures using botulinum toxin ('Botox'), soft tissue fillers, sclerotherapy and liposuction are undertaken. Cosmetic surgery is advised where the skin has been badly affected by burns and where there are birth defects. In other cases it is used for aesthetic purposes - a big market considering how conscious we are of our physical appearance.

The diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases in children is performed by pediatric dermatologists. The diagnosis and management of skin diseases due to an altered immune system, including blistering (bullous) diseases, is taken care of by immunodermatologists.

Sexually transmitted diseases are treated by the subspecialty, venereology, and the superficial venous system is dealt with by phlebology. Both these categories come under the expertise of dermatologists. Tumors, whether benign or malignant, also come under their purview. They use various techniques like the scalpel, chemo, electro, cyro surgery, lasers, topical and injection immunotherapy, photodynamic treatments and chemotherapy.

Research is an ongoing process and with proper diagnosis there are very few skin problems that cannot be treated. Doctors all over the world believe that prevention is better than the cure and ensure that a patient in their care is cured with minimum pain and stress.
