Laser Liposuction - The New Method For Fat Removal

Laser liposuction is a relatively new liposuction technique that is sweeping its way across the country. This liposuction technique promises a more effective and comfortable treatment than traditional liposuction. But how does it work and are these claims true?

Laser liposuction is not a cosmetic fat removal fad or a sham procedure based on marketing hype. It is a real invasive surgical procedure that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States FDA in 2007. The fact that it is an FDA-approved procedure indicates that the concept had to be evaluated in many patients and had to demonstrate that it was both safe and effective. It is based on years of scientific research and experience.

How does laser liposuction work? Traditional liposuction uses mechanical trauma (beating up the fat so to speak with a metal rod) to loosen up the fat so it can then be suctioned out. Smartlipo attacks the fat in a different manner. Through an inserted fiberoptic cable, laser light is introduced to melt fat cells. After melting, the liquefied fat can then be suctioned out or the liquid fat can be left to be removed naturally through the body's lymphatic system.

So what is the advantage of laser vs. traditional liposuction? By melting fat with a small laser light, rather then beating on it, laser liposuction causes less trauma to the tissues which lessens the severity of the procedure. There is a general consensus that it is less painful than after traditional liposuction. In small areas, there may not be a need to suction the fat out after it is melted. In larger areas of the body, secondary suctioning will still be needed but the liquid and loose fat comes out easier which is less stressful to patient and plastic surgeon alike. An additional benefit is the effect of heat on the overlying skin. For the first time, liposuction results do not have to depend exclusively on the patient's skin and its ability to contract on its own. The different wavelengths of the laser can help tighten loosen skin and possibly improve the appearance of cellulite as well.

Laser liposuction, like any fat removal procedure, takes time and patience to get the final result. While some improvement may be able to be seen immediately after the procedure, additional time is needed as the body resorbs loose and liquid fat and the swelling subsides. Further changes will continue over the first few weeks after the procedure. Complete results may take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to fully seen. One will notice, in most cases, that not only are the treated areas smaller but that the skin is firmer in those areas as well.
