Laser Hair Removal - Questions Answered

Many people have questions about laser hair removal. Here are some of them answered.

There are many people who are interested in the process of laser hair removal. The laser has been around for decades, but was only approved by the FDA for removing unwanted hairiness on the human body in the late 1990's. Some females have excess hairiness on their faces, abdomens and backs while others just don't want to shave their legs, underarms or bikini lines anymore. Some males also have excess growth that they'd like to eradicate, such as a furry back or unibrow. For hairy humans who are interested in nearly permanent removal options, here are some answers to questions commonly asked:

- Who is the FDA and what do they have to do with this method? The FDA stands for Food and Drug Administration and is a governmental agency that oversees the safety of foods, medications and medical devices. They perform test studies and research before allowing a product to be used by consumers. When a product gets a green light from the Food and Drug Administration, consumers can rest assured that it's safe for their use. Lasers for this purpose received the okay in 1995.

- How does this system work? The term laser originally started out as an acronym which stood for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." This, essentially, is how the technique works. A beam of intense light and heat is directed at a patient's skin which in turn damages the follicle where hair growth originates. A damaged follicle will shut down and stop producing.

- Is it painful? The original products developed during the mid to late 1990s were painful and caused damage to the surrounding skin, but the technologically advanced devices on today's market are much improved. Before a procedure is done, a topical anesthetic is applied which cuts down on painfulness. There will still be some sting and burn upon the zapping but it's bearable for most people.

- Does it matter what a person's complexion is, in terms of being fair, ruddy, olive or dark skinned? Yes, it does. Certain lasers work better for certain skin tones. The dermatologist, plastic surgeon or specialist performing the procedure will use the method appropriate for each individual complexion.

- What will a person look like directly after a treatment? Can they go right back to work? While a recipient can go right back to their job, they need to be prepared for an appearance of redness, swelling and a bit of initial pain. All will subside within a matter of hours and shouldn't hamper their ability to perform job duties.

- Is laser hair removal permanent? This system is very close to permanent. It will take multiple and separate sessions for an optimum result but should reach an 80% reduction in growth when completed.

If a man or woman has excess body hair that they'd like to get rid of for good, they should go for a consultation appointment with a trained professional who specializes in this procedure to find out the specifics for their body. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons perform laser hair removal in offices and medical spas all across the nation.

Did You Know There Are Authentic Laser Hair Removal Machines And Then There Are The Pretenders?

If you are looking for laser hair removal knowing the one to choose is the challenge.

Long Lasting Hair Removal Without The Negative Side Effects

Many methods have been used over the years to achieve smooth, hair-free skin, however, all have had their difficult, even painful and unsightly, side effects.

Thankfully, scientists and doctors have continued to research ways to improve hair removal.

Enter laser treatment. Safe and reliable, laser hair removal has proven to be the most effective method and is, with care, free from side effects.

Unlike many hair removal alternatives, authentic lasers are safe for any area of the body, even during pregnancy. The specially designed laser penetrates no further than the dermis - the second layer of the skin - so there is never any burning or damage to internal organs, glands or deeper layers of tissue.

What Can Laser Therapy Do For You

The need for permanent hair removal for men and for women may cover a wide range of reasons, from removal of light hair for improved appearance to the removal of thick hair growth that inhibits personal confidence.

Monique found the intense embarrassment caused by her excessive facial hair destroyed her confidence making her a virtual prisoner in her home: "After just one visit to (Sydney clinic) Laser by Sia, I was amazed...My self esteem has risen and I now have the social life I've been dreaming of."

Laser Hair Removal Replaces Waxing In ALL Areas

Laser hair removal is proving itself superior, and far less painful, in the most sensitive of areas and is the preferred method for Brazilian genital hair removal.

Waxing for back hair removal and chest hair removal for men has long been the accepted, painful, method but advanced laser hair therapy has dramatically reduced the discomfort and extended the results.

So Who Are The Pretenders In The Laser Therapy Market?

They are Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Machines, passed off by some clinics as identical to genuine hair removal lasers.

But what is the difference?

Genuine hair removal lasers are devoted to just that one purpose and use only one specific light wavelength. IPL machines use a wide range of wavelengths and can damage skin if used at the higher energy levels causing burning and pain.

Because of the intense focus of genuine lasers, fewer sessions are necessary and each session is much more effective.

Specialists Guarantee Cost-Effective, Safe Results

Laser by Sia have performed over 14,000 procedures and are specialists in laser hair removal, promising clients a comfortable, discreet environment.

"We only use the authentic FDA approved equipment. Definitely no laser equivalents such as IPL." Director Sia Krebs says. "Our staff are all highly trained and we use the safest laser equipment and techniques in Australia.

"Lasers are not only fantastic for body hair removal, we also get great results treating areas of excessive pigmentation and sun damage. We love it when clients tell us they not only look younger but feel younger too and the difference it has made to their lives."

What Are the Non-Surgical Skin Tightening Methods to Prevent Laxity?

The next line of therapy to address the problem of sagging skin is to use some form of skin tightening device. There are many on the market and include devices such as Refirme, TITAN, or Thermage. Titan uses infrared light (IR) to tighten the skin, Thermage uses unipolar radiofrequency energy (RF), and Refirme uses IR and bipolar RF. The ReFirme or Polaris-Laser Lift is one of the most popular FDA-approved nonablative procedures for maintaining a youthful appearance by skin tightening. Unlike Thermage, it uses a laser combined with radio-frequency energy and pulsed light. The last method of skin tightening involves laser skin resurfacing. The older methods include the non-fractionalised erbium or CO2 lasers. The newer safer methods include erbium with profractional technology, the Fraxel or the gold standard Active Fx fractionalised CO2 laser. Many doctors, including myself believe a combination of treatments (surgical and nonsurgical) get the best tightening results. The Refirme (used to be called the Polaris) is probably my favourite method as it is not especially painful, has a combination rejuvenation laser, does not cause later skin damage and has a lot of experience in the cosmetic market.

Why do you like the Polaris-Laser Lift over other RF devices?

The box says "this advanced system incorporates three forms of energy to improve skin texture and skin colour", but I technically like the Polaris RF because it uses bipolar radiofrequency, which has been shown to be safer and more effective than monopolar. Unlike less controllable and less safe monopolar, bipolar RF does not travel through the body and this means each treatment can be customized through the system's computer to control the depth and degree of the heating process; hence the technology can focus energy to a specific depth of skin for more accurate treatment. Newer tripolar devices may even prove to be better again. I also like it as the RF can cause the collagen to contract and tighten over a period of time and the combination diode laser can help to reduce other problems, such as redness and brown pigmentation blotches. The procedure is also rapid and bloodless. It is usual to have four sessions of treatment are performed separated by three weeks. It is favoured by many celebrities including Madonna and Felicity Kendall.

How does the Polaris RF system actually work?

Nobody really knows how this system works but we assume radio-frequency (RF hereinafter) passes electrical energy through the tissue and resistance produces heat within the deeper dermis. This bundle of thermal energy can be accurately controlled by computer evenly to three-dimensional volumes of collagen tissue at controllable depths. This energy causes immediate collagen denaturation of the triple-helix, which is thought to be the mechanism for immediate tissue contraction. There is also subsequent new collagen formation (neocollagenesis) over the next month, which further tightens the dermal tissue and reduces wrinkles.

What are the benefits of Polaris-Laser Lift over other procedures and surgeries?

For a start, it is totally non-invasive. This means there are no incisions and no evidence to date of later tissue damage. There is no bleeding or bruising and the risk of scarring is minimal. A level of control can be achieved with the Polaris that is difficult with other treatments. It utilizes three different forms of energy to reach multiple skin problems. This means we can see an improvement in wrinkles, sagging and colour. There may be areas of slight swelling or redness that quickly resolves over a few days. Make-up may be applied immediately. You may resume all normal activities immediately. The full effect of your treatment develops over a few months following the procedure and can be expected to last for several months or years. As with any cosmetic procedure, the results can be expected to fade gradually over time, at which time the procedure can be repeated if desired.

Is it painful?

A Polaris-Laser Lift can be performed with topical anaesthetic cream applied about an hour before your treatment. Some patients do not require anaesthetic cream due to the cooling created by the stream of cool air that hits the skin during treatment. When the machine is pulsed, patients feel brief, heat in the treatment site followed by the immediate cooling effect of the air spray. For those patients who are sensitive, the topical anaesthetic cream is recommended.

What kind of results can I expect?

As with all RF devices, this is difficult to estimate. Some patients see results immediately. However, for most patients the results are gradual over a three to six month period as the skin tightens and more new collagen is gradually formed. Depending on the area treated, the skin laxity and your desired results, multiple treatments may be required. Skin will continue to age as it has in the past and eventually you may wish to have another anti-aging procedure. Most patients will see fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth fill in, while the deeper frown lines and grooves are softened. Facial skin and the skin along the neck can be tightened providing a mild, non-surgical browlift or facelift effect. This tightening effect can be used to firm up loose or sagging tissue in other parts of the body. This same deep Polaris tissue heating may also have benefits for treating acne, acne scarring and stretch marks. Redness and brown blotchiness also gradually improve two to three months after the treatments are complete. The worldwide safety record of this procedure has revealed very few adverse effects thus far.

How much does it cost?

The Polaris is an expensive device (over 100k Euro) and there is only one in Ireland. It is normally costs 350 Euro per treatment and a group of five costs 1250 Euro. However, in recessionary times Ailesbury has now dropped this to 200 Euro per treatment or 4 for 800 Euro.

Laser Hair Removal and Blonde Hair

Laser Hair Removal on Blond Hair is a controversial subject when discussing its overall effectiveness. As you do your research, you'll come across many spas and clinics that claim they can remove unwanted hair that is blond, gray, red or white. If you find a clinic like this, its very important not to get sucked into their trap. The reality is that there is currently not a laser on the market that can treat non-pigmented hair colors; if someone says they can, they aren't being truthful. The only permanent hair reduction method that will work for blonds is electrolysis.

Changed scenario

Earlier, effectiveness of laser technology was depended on the skin color and hair color. Actually, laser hair removal is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis. Laser gets absorbed in the melanin pigment; the laser energy gets converted to thermal energy which destroys the hair follicle. Because of this pigment factor, it is difficult to achieve desired results of hair removal in case of blond, gray, red and white hairs. When lasers were first developed, they could only treat those patients with light skin tones and dark hair colors.

As laser technology has progressed, lasers have been developed that can effectively treat skin tones ranging from light to dark; however, those with lighter hair colors still need to seek out alternatives because Laser Hair Removal on Blond Hair simply won't work as of now. In the future this may be possible as technology improves.

Opting for Permanent Solution

Despite what some clinics and spas may claim, Laser Hair Removal on Blond Hair is not a permanent solution, therefore if you attempt to undergo treatment, you'll be left with empty pockets and the area will still be full of unwanted hair. If you have blond hair and are looking to permanently remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal is simply not the option for you. Don't be discouraged though, electrolysis is another form of permanent hair reduction that can safely and effectively remove any color hair permanently!

Laser Surgery For Stretch Marks - Does it Work?

Stretch marks are caused by skin stretching during periods of rapid weight gain or loss. This is why stretch marks most commonly affect pregnant women, but can also affect teenagers, bodybuilders and weightlifters, or anyone starting a new athletic or fitness regime.

People considering laser surgery for stretch marks are generally warned to consider their options very carefully before going ahead with any procedures. While some physicians recommend laser surgery, there is very little evidence to support any positive results from this procedure. It is a general consensus of dermatologists, skin specialists, plastic surgeons and most general practitioners that laser surgery is of little or no value.

Lasers work by removing layers of tissue. As stretch marks occur on the deepest layer of the dermis, all one can expect from a laser surgery is to disguise or hide the appearance of the marks by altering the layers of skin above the source of the scarring. In addition the procedure is expensive and painful, usually requires several sessions, and can leave even worse permanent scarring when things go wrong. Clinical studies have shown no improvement when laser treatment is applied to stretch marks.

The only proven surgical method of removing stretch marks is the tummy tuck, which can remove much of the skin on the abdomen, effectively cropping the areas affected by scarring off the body.

The best bet for combating stretch marks on the body is a topical treatment that promotes the body's production of elastin and collagen. These treatments will not completely remove stretch marks, but can drastically reduce their appearance, and are a much cheaper, safer and effective alternative to laser surgery for stretch marks.

What is Laser Hair Care?

Laser hair care or more precisely hair removal is a very hot topic for both men and women. Waxing, shaving and plucking can be a tedious activity since the results are short term, not to mention the ingrown hairs, redness and dryness that always seems to follow. With the evolution of laser hair removal technology, this is now a safe alternative to remove hair with intense pulsating beams of light for the long term and in many cases permanently.

Laser hair removal can be used safely and successfully to remove unwanted hair from the body; common locations include, legs, arms, armpits, back, face, and bikini line. The possibilities are endless. It should be noted however that to achieve permanent hair removal it may take multiple treatments. Another important note, laser treatment only works on short visible hair or stubble.

The general procedure is the same no matter where you go to get your treatment. To prepare you may have a topical local anesthetic applied to your skin to decrease discomfort and eye goggles to protect your eyes from accidental laser light exposure. The doctor uses a hand held laser to your skin; the laser light passes through the skin's surface to penetrate the hair follicle which in turn is damaged by the intense heat of the laser. During the procedure you may feel a stinging sensation and smell singed hair, this is all normal. The time involved depends on the area being treated it can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours.

Although hair removal your doctor will discuss a few standard precautions that should be followed to ensure the best possible results and help you the avoid side effects that can occur. It is normal to experience some redness, swelling, and stinging for up to 48 hours after your treatment. Some individuals also experience a crusting/slight scabbing of the skin this should to treated with petroleum jelly, perfumes and additives of other moisturizers can cause add irritation. It is also recommended that you avoid sweating (ie. Exercise) for the first 24 hours, this can also cause irritation of the treated area. Stay out of the sun for several weeks and be gentle when washing.

Although side effects are considered rare, they do occur. For instance some individuals may experience either a lightening or darkening of the skin of the treated area, these changes can be temporary or permanent. Blistering, scarring, infections, changes in skin texture and hair changes are all possible side effects, and should be discussed with your doctor before you undergo any laser hair removal procedure.

It is important to remember this is a medical procedure and precautions need to be taken. Always talk to your doctor to ensure you are a good candidate and to be informed of all possible risks. For instance some prescription, over the counter and herbal medications and supplements are not safe to take when having a laser hair removal treatment.

You always make a point of checking out the doctor or facility you are planning on using. Make sure they have the training and experience necessary. Ask your regular doctor for a referral or to be involved in the screening process. Take the time to educate yourself on the procedure so you know the proper questions to ask. Arm yourself with knowledge.
